This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it.
Everybody was sure Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought Anybody could do it but Nobody realised that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did it what Anybody could have done.
That is happening everyday in the workplace, isn't it?

my observation is that this is more about motivation than responsibility. those who will get impacted, good or bad, tend to make the first move. it is the human nature, isn't it.
I think differently. Motivation involves in the workplace, but even if someone is motivated but lack of sense of responsibility, things will still be left undone. Although, I agree, someone who is impacted, good or bad, will tend to make the first move. But It is very often that you can see that people don't even know that they should be the person who should initiate the process and the first move. They are simply lack of proper knowledge to their jobs, and also not with a sense of responsibility. Although they might as well be not motivated, but even if they are motivated, nobody is actually doing anything anyway. (my observation to my current company also kind of confirms this too... sadly.)
I had a grin on my face when seeing your last sentence... I used to be very borthered by such situations. Now, I will do one of following two things: (1) Just get the job done and gently tell the responsible parties that I did them a BIG favor... ok, I admit that some nasty languages are more effective sometimes. (2)Since I am no saint nor superman, will just allow the job to slip. I will make sure my ass is well covered, then tell auditors what has happened. Hope things are not getting too frustracting at your end. Cheers.
Naah, I am not frustrating at all. Actually, if it is a small favour, I'd do it. But I probably am not a person who's going to work my ass off to do someone else an extremely big favour. Most of the time, I'd help them (as a supporting role, not a leading role) for the first time. I'd tell them that it's their job, and they have a free choice to choose whether to do it. People always have a choice. :)
